Abstract
The welding process is often conducted on certain position because it must follow a construction such as the welding of ceilings, edges, frames above the floor and others. In the sustainable welding, a construction may need sequential fast welding with different positions of welding. The mandatory position of welding may give different results on strength and hardness of welding result (Cary, 1980). Final assignment is using three different positions, such as flat (IG), horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G). Electrode E6013 is used in this welding process. The type of process is SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding). Tensile strength, hardness and microstructure of welding are tested. Related to flat welding (1G), hardness is found high (703 HRB), but when tensile is attested, welding strength decreases (64.45 kgf/mm2). In flat welding, microstructure is dominated by perlite which can be influential to the highest level of hardness. Horizontal welding (2G) has a declining hardness level (640 HRB). Result of testing of tensile strength (76.78 kgf/mm2) indicates that the tensile strength at 2G is greater than that at 1G, but smaller than at 3G. Microstructure is dominated by ferrite that may reduce hardness level and tensile strength. Vertical welding (3G) has obtained the lower hardness level (662 HRB). In 3G, the result of testing of tensile strength shows that welding strength is higher which approaches the expected standard value (64.45 kgf/mm2). Microstructure is dominated by perlite which impacts to the increase of hardness level and tensile strength. It is concluded that the best technical choice in welding process is 3G because it has the highest tensile strength. Hardness level in 3G is the closest to the standard value of Steel AISI 4340 because the difference is not much quite. A microstructure with the phase mostly shown up is perlite because it helps to increase mechanical character.
