Abstract

Waste of laundry is one of pollution source that can damage the environment quality. Total phosphate and detergent are parameters in the waste of laundry that can pollute the environment quality. An alternative in the wastewater treatment is use aquatic plants through phytoremediation process. The purpose of this research was to compare the ability of floating plants (Spirodela polyrhiza) and drifting plants (Hydrilla verticillata) to removal total phosphate and detergent concentrations in the waste of laundry and determine the density of floating plants (Spirodela polyrhiza) and drifting plants (Hydrilla verticillata) to removal total phosphate and detergent concentration in the waste of laundry. This research using a floating plant (Spirodela polyrhiza) and drifting plants (Hydrilla verticillata). The research was done in batch with plant density variations, 60 mg/cm2, 70 mg/cm2 and 80 mg/cm2. Time sampling performed every 2 days for 10 days. The results of this research showed that Hydrilla verticillata plants has better effectiveness than Spirodela polyrhiza plants to removal detergent concentrations. The effectiveness of Hydrilla verticillata plants occurs in plant density 60 mg/cm2 on the fourth day. Detergent concentration can be reduced to 10.55% from concentration of 52.78 mg/l to 47.21 mg/l. While the total phosphate concentration in both test plants for all density actually increased. An Increase the total phosphate concentrations was greatest in the Hydrilla verticillata plants by 256.14% of the concentration of 1.71 mg/l to 6.09 mg/l on the sixth day with plant density 80 mg/cm2.
